Just to the left of the refrigerator in the kitchen, there is a
door that leads to the laudry/storage room. This will have ample
shelves to store our 'extra' stuff of serve as a GREAT pantry/wine
cellar. In the floor will be a trap door that will lead into the
warm 'basement'. It will be nearly 4 feet wide to give better access
if we wish to put a new water storage tank in. We may end up putting
a water tank that will store water directly from the well here,
but the main purpose is to provide an insulated space to place tanks
that will store heated water that will be used in the infloor heating
system, the ramps of the sunken carport and the reverse
flor anti-freezing system.
This door may be rather heavy after it is built, so I have designed
a caounter balance that will be located on the wall just inside
the door. When the door is all the way closed down, the balance
will of course be at the top. There will be a pin or catch that
will hold the weight up, keeping the door closed securely. Releasing
the catch or pin will put weight on the door and idealy a few ounces
of force should be able to open it.
To install this door, I had to re-design the floor joists a bit.
This can be seen in the lower left corner of the final sketch.
