The Bailey Berm House
Rafters and Beams

Drawing the plans for the framing of the rafters has been a bit of an education. At one point, I thought I would spread out rafters over the roof with 35+ inch centers. That means that there are 35+ inches from the center of one rafter to the center of the next rafter. If I use planks to deck the roof, this will work fine, but I think that I may end up using 1" plywood sheets that measure 4' x 8'.

With the refined 32" centers, there will be more strength in the roof pluss the rafters will fall in better locations to hold up the 96" sheets. Each sheet will rest on 4 rafters with the seem falling on the middle of the rafter at each end giving the next sheet in line something to rest on. A second layer of plywood should be staggered to give fewer places for a straight through penetration should leaking occur before the completion of water proofing.

Pending approval from a structural engineer, the beams that hold up the rafters will be made of oak found on the property. In the third, forth and fifth sketches, you can see how the roof, beams and rafters fit together. None of them will need to b moved to make room for the fireplace. The flue on the fireplace will be a stove pipe. I am concerned that if we send the stone chimney all the way out the roof, much needed heat will escape by convection to the outside.

These logs will be as much as 15 feet in the air. Nearly 5 meters. How I am going to get them in the air will be a challenge. But I plan to cross that bridge when I come to it. I am considering inventing a crane from all the logs that are laying around. I will have to contemplate that for a while.
